What a manager does?
  • Develops the artist's career
  • Takes charge of business affairs
  • Negotiates with the record label and tour promoters on behalf of the artist
  • Procures work for the artist (books, soundtracks, etc)
  • Leaves the artist to do the actual music and takes care of financial/legal affairs and media attention

How much do managers get paid?
Usually between 10% and 25% of the artist's earnings, although the standard rate is 20% of gross earnings. Of course this can vary depending on the contract and the clout of the parts involved.

Does a band need a manager?
A manager is not essential. Some bands feel content having a record company, lawyer, accountant and perhaps press agent on board. However, a good manager will have contacts and might be able to help bring the band success.
